What is Configuration
Management
What is
Configuration Management? The answer to this is quite simple, as the
definition states: “The process of identifying and defining
Configuration Items in a system, recording and reporting the status
of Configuration Items and Requests for Change, and verifying the
completeness and correctness of Configuration
Items.”
What is Configuration
Management? In my opinion the definition does not do it justice,
that is in my opinion Configuration Management forms the nucleus or
“hub” around which, all the other processes
gather.
What is Configuration
Management? – Understand the
relationships
Why do I say this?
Each individual process can achieve certain positive things in their
own right. But the true benefit of a framework like ITIL comes from
the interaction between these processes. The information that all
these processes gain must be used proactively by other processes to
reap the benefits.
What is Configuration
Management? – More than just the CMDB
And you guessed it;
all processes gain this information through the single repository of
this information, called the Configuration Management Database. The
CMDB is one outcome of the overall process, and a very important
one. However, Configuration management ultimately gives an
organization the understanding of its infrastructure that it
typically has never had before!
