doing some research for a similar topic and started to look into the
health care issue only to discover that not a great deal of
importance is paid to the subject.

Health care has one of
the most significant business drivers yet application failure rates
are still quite high. The business driver that I am referring to is
human life. That is the possibility of loss of human life if the
software that drives a resuscitation machine
fails!
How then do we get the
focus in this area? Well we need to help the Healthcare fraternity
understand the benefits.
Configuration
Management contributes to the economic and effective delivery of IT
services by:

information on CI’s and their documentation. This information
supports all other Service Management processes, such as Release
Management, Change Management, Incident Management, Problem
Management, Capacity Management and Contingency Planning.
Controlling valuable
CI’s. Now we start to see
some specifics. Managing the configuration of every hardware and
software CI in the health area. Being able to have the unshakeable
knowledge of the configuration of every item out
there!
Facilitating adherence
to legal obligations. Configuration
Management maintains an inventory of all items of software within a
health IT infrastructure.
Making software
Changes visible. Such Changes can be
used to trigger investigations by IT management into possible
Changes that may be needed for data protection, license management
and regulatory compliance.
Contributing to
contingency planning. The CMDB and secure
libraries facilitate the restoration of IT service in the event of a
disaster, by identifying the required CI’s and their
location.
Improving security by
controlling the versions of CI’s in use. This makes it more
difficult for these CI’s to be changed accidentally, maliciously, or
for erroneous versions to be added. Allowing the organization to
perform impact analysis and schedule Changes safely, efficiently and
effectively. This reduces the risk of Changes affecting the live
environment.
