commonly known has come ahead in leaps and bounds over the last few
years. There are now literally dozens of software development
companies vying for the position of being in the top half dozen or
so preferred vendors.

that we get asked a lot whether it be on this subject or a lot of
similar ones comes down to something like, “Because you come across
a lot of different software while consulting, which do you think is
best in this situation…”.
There is no one rule
fits all and there are so many factors to
consider.
Our policy, and I
believe the best one, is to remain independent of the software
giants. That is, in a column like this not to list them at all as
that can be misconstrued as a recommendation.

people at different organizations who will quite happily recommend a
specific application, but I am always wary of individuals who are
too quick to jump to the recommended solution without firstly
understanding some important things.
Before looking at any
software identify these things:
- the
symptoms
- underlying
problems
- business
requirements
- way up all possible
solutions then
- and only then
recommend a solution.
