Network Configuration
Management
Network configuration
management, like the Software Configuration management and Hardware
Configuration management can be regarded as subsets of what ITIL
terms simply as ‘the Configuration Management Process’.
In fact, because
different parts of the industry currently look upon these areas in
their own way there are so many interpretations of what these titles
mean. What needs to occur is that all these areas should be viewed
as part of the same process and managed with the input of the
operational areas.
Network configuration
management – which area to start in
Network configuration
management must have formal interaction with your typical ICT
Infrastructure management areas. Review of the infrastructure is a
classic case where this lack of communication causes difficulties.
Let’s start with the review. This task consists of reviewing all
aspects of the current ICT organisation. It can be completed in many
different ways, for example:
- Internal review
and/or internal audit.
- External review
and/or external audit.
- Internal
benchmarking and/or external benchmarking.
- It may use any one
of the above mechanisms, and often a combination of techniques is
employed.
A review should
consider all aspects of the ICT operation
including:
- The organisation,
its culture, its goals and its businesses including where ICT fits
within the overall structure.
- All ICT Management
and planning aspects.
- All technological
aspects.
- The ICT services and
the quality of the delivery of those services.
- People issues
covering resource levels, skills, knowledge.
- Processes, policies
and procedures.
- All aspects of
documentation.
- Geographical
aspects, locations and environments.
- External influences
and factors, e.g., industry trends and market developments.
