Configuration
Management white papers can come from many sources. I must admit
that some of these make some interesting reading. You will typically
find these provided by certain vendors - depending on their focus,
such as software or hardware.
When looking for
Configuration Management white papers, think about both areas as for
a consistent Configuration Management process both have to be taken
into account and don’t forget documentation either; because it also
should be a Configuration Item (CI).
Some of the ones I
have viewed have been interesting because of the insight the author
has applied and others are interesting because of the total lack of
understanding that the author has displayed.
Configuration
Management white papers – starting
point
The main benefit for
you to search for any white paper is to give you an idea where to
start your implementation. Look for something that gives you some
examples of how to start deciding on the scope and depth that you
wish to achieve.
Configuration
Management white papers – where to
next
For most
implementations, Change Management and Configuration Management
support tools will be necessary, as paper-based systems are
impractical. Computer hardware and storage resources are required to
accommodate Configuration Management tools and, in particular, the
CMDB. So also look for some guidance on tools!
