Configuration
Management Class
Configuration
management class typically consists of 2 days training. I have a
reliable source that the split between theory presentations and
practical work should be a 30% / 70% split respectively. I have
included a short summary of the things that should be covered over
those two days.
Configuration
management class - The Configuration Management
The candidate is able
to understand and introduce a Configuration Management Plan. The
candidate is able to:
- Implement the
Configuration Management process, based on the Configuration
Management Plan.
- Describe the
difference between Asset Management and Configuration
Management.
Configuration
management class - The Configuration Management
Database.
The candidate is able
to perform an initial capture of data for the Configuration
Management Database (CMDB). The candidate is able to manage the CMDB
at the procedure level. The candidate is able
to:
- Plan and implement
an initial capture of CI data.
- Populate the
CMDB.
- Implement procedures
for the registration of new CIs and removal of write-off
CIs.
- Manage and maintain
the CMDB to ensure that it is consistently up to
date.
Configuration
management class – Designing coding systems, attributes and Naming
Conventions
The candidate is able
to set up and maintain coding systems, make proposals for name
conventions and identify attributes and relationships for
configuration items (CIs). The candidate is able
to:
- Design and implement
impact codes.
- Design and implement
priority codes.
- Design and implement
naming convention for CIs.
- Identify attributes
of CIs and all required relationships.
Configuration
management class - Procedures and working
instructions
The candidate is able
to work according to Configuration Management procedures and
translate these procedures into practical activities. The candidate
is able to plan, elaborate, optimize and carry out these activities.
The candidate is able to implement procedures and working
instructions for:
- The use of support
tools.
- The registration of
CIs.
- The identification
of CIs.
- The verification of
CIs.
- Audits of CIs
against the CDMB.
Configuration
management class – Reporting
The candidate is able
to produce reports on the basis of the Configuration Management
Database and explain what reports are possible. The candidate is
able to:
- identify the type
and format of reports required within the
organisation
- Produce impact
reports, summary reports and history reports for the following
target groups: the Configuration Manager, the Change Manager, the
Problem Manager, the Service Level Manager, and the Availability
Manager.
