Change and
Configuration Management Software
'Change and
configuration management software' should be integrated as much as
possible. Yet the industry is only now getting to the point of
achieving this. Having said this there are some stand out titles out
there with titles such as HP Openview, Qualiparc and Remedy as some
that spring to mind quickly.
Not that I’m saying
any of these titles are perfect – but they are getting
better!
'Change and
configuration management software' – The first question you should
ask!
“Do we really need
software tools?” Before you answer I suggest that you take step back
and formally do some assessment and consciously make decision based
on a factual business need, rather than an unqualified perception.
This has been said
before, but if you look at the glossy brochures and listen to the
sales talk, Service Management tools are indispensable. However,
good people, good process descriptions, and good procedures and
working instructions are the basis for successful Service
Management.
The need for, and the
sophistication of, the tools required will depend on the business
need for IT services and, to some extent, the size of the
organization.
'Change and
configuration management software' – What do I do
next?
The best advice I can
give is to get your processes in order first! Some people will be
sitting there thinking ”we have processes already”. Well, I deal
with different organizations every day and they all tend to say the
same thing, but out of those ranging from small companies to
multinationals – yes even the big electronics companies do not have
their processes as clearly defined and followed as well as what they
would have you think!
