4.3 Configuration
Management refers to the typical items and topics that must be
considered when formulating the plan. Remember this is not the plan
template in itself but rather a checklist of things that need to be
taken into consideration for a full analysis of the overall
requirement.

Consider the Project
Scope or the Scope of the Operation: The scope of the
plan needs to be determined, this step ensures that configuration
management is to be carried out over a valid range of activities.
Ensure critical activities are covered however do not extend beyond
the required scope.
Consider useful or
dictated Methodology: the plan should refer
to the Standard Operating Procedures to be presented in this
segment. Should there be any deviations from these SOPs, the
Methodology section should identify and justify such
differences.
Identify Roles and
Responsibilities: all activities in the
plan must be associated with a specific person to carry them out. In
this section, any interfaces to other groups such as inventory
management, QA or audit should be identified.
Investigate Other
Required Resources: as part of the plan,
you need to identify the other resources such as the
following:
- Software
tools
- Printing of
forms
- Training
Prepare Budgetary
Considerations: determine the budget
needed to carry out the full Configuration Management Plan. This is
arrived at by estimating the costs of all resources needed for the
Configuration Management project.

Timing of Major
Activities: this section should
define at what stage each of the other SOPs should take place.
Overview Communication
plan including Reporting Formats, Template and
Tools: identify the forms to
be used, databases or other documents such as spreadsheets, software
tools, etc.
Scope
Repository: indicate where all
configuration management documents will be kept, who is responsible
for them and what the access privileges are.
This is crucial if
documentation is to be maintained in electronic format.
